Abstract

With the objective to improve the education of system literate designers we seek to develop the pedagogy in Systems Oriented Design (SOD) (Sevaldson, 2009) at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO).

The platform for this study involves the method of GIGA mapping which is a systems design method that utilize visualization as a major method in order to explore exceedingly complex situations, structures, and systems. Systemic relations concern the analysis of the ties and nodes that occur and influence structures and systems, all which can visualized in the very same GIGA map.

Through this paper we seek to explore pedagogical methods to teach systemic relationships (Sevaldson, 2011) informed by the emerging diversity of GIGA maps.

The method for this study was primarily done by matching a condensed set of systemic relations with the different types of GIGA maps to create a set of simple rules for a beginner’s to GIGA mapping. We have analysed over one hundred GIGA maps and six different levels of various complexity emerged in order to enter the method of GIGA mapping during the research. We call these steps of complexity, the GIGA mapping ladder. In extension we have analysed the GIGA mapping ladder up against Blooms taxonomy of knowledge.

In the GIGA mapping ladder one displays a mastery of system proficiency and need no rules for GIGA mapping inspired by the Dreyfus model(Dreyfus & Dreyfus, 1980).

Recently we have taught SOD bachelor studios, in addition to teaching SOD master courses. Since the first Bachelor studio during spring 2015 we saw the need to differentiate system concepts and SOD methods to suit a BA student or a MA student in systems thinking for practising designers.
